About the Role
The Preservation and Safety (P&S) Officer is responsible for protecting employees and visitors, preserving art, and maintaining the museum's facilities. This role serves as a public face of the museum, providing exceptional hospitality and creating positive visitor experiences.
Responsibilities
- Detect and deter loss and damage by enforcing museum policies and code of conduct.
- Document incidents by recording observations and submitting reports to supervisors.
- Investigate and report accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, and safety hazards to the Security Operations Center (SOC).
- Act as first responder to alarms, medical emergencies, and other incidents.
- Perform post orders, conduct interior and exterior patrols, and enforce access control policies.
- Serve as a point of contact for employees and visitors, interacting positively and welcomingly.
- Stay informed about museum events, programming, collection, and exhibitions.
- Utilize email, apps, and museum software.
- Maintain a neat and professional appearance, wearing the required department uniform.
- Demonstrate self-motivation and attention to detail.
- Complete daily tasks professionally and collaboratively.
- Learn new skills and information, including attending tours of new exhibitions.
- Be consistent and punctual, attending shift briefings, meetings, and trainings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- NYS Security Guard License required (valid for at least 6 months after hire date).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 18 years of age or older.
- Reliable primary and alternative transportation.
- Knowledge of basic security, fire inspection, and emergency evacuation procedures.
- Knowledge of museum operations and procedures or experience in protecting cultural properties, schools, museums, libraries, or hospitality venues.
- Strong written, verbal, and oral communication skills; use of email required.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to interact with cultural sensitivity.
- Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- High level of personal accountability, reliability, and integrity.
