About the Role
As the Senior Manager of System Design, you are responsible for performing all people-management activities to meet the demands of the projects, bids and products assigned to your team. The system design team specifies communication-based train control systems by performing system design, signaling design, analysis, modeling, and simulation. This includes analyzing customer requirements, developing system features, and verifying compliance with technical requirements. The role contributes to strategic decision-making, builds cross-organizational relationships, and ensures functional coordination.
Responsibilities
- Reviews estimates for bids and proposals.
- Monitors system and signaling design progress and ensures team resources are adequate.
- Mentors and guides the team to ensure a clear plan for high-quality design delivery.
- Proactively monitors team progress and resolves issues promptly.
- Identifies development risks and creates mitigation plans.
- Maintains strong working relationships with Software, Hardware, Safety, and ITV groups.
- Evaluates workload to ensure adequate team resources and skills, escalating concerns to management.
- Ensures Hitachi Rail development processes are followed for safe and high-quality systems.
- Promotes a safety culture where product safety is paramount.
- Ensures safety is built into the design by early identification and resolution of safety-related defects.
- Assigns team members to projects, products, and tasks to meet system design resource needs.
- Develops team members through training, coaching, and mentoring.
- Develops and executes change management for discipline improvements.
- Performs regular performance/objective reviews and yearly salary reviews.
- Provides coaching and mentoring to team members, including work package managers.
- Mentors work package managers to plan, organize, and execute activities for timely project deliverables.
- Responsible for staff planning, hiring, and training plans.
- Manages activities for proposal development and cost, deadline, and risk estimation.
- Responsible for the professional development of teams (organization, competences/skills, careers).
- Ensures deployment of processes, methods, tools, and policies.
- Supervises contractors and specialists, defining work, coaching, monitoring progress, and directing priorities.
- Identifies and implements process improvement initiatives.
- Engages other leaders to ensure design strategy consistency and capitalization on other designs.
- Maximizes product and design re-use.
- Ensures maximum process consistency across all projects and products.
- Provides a professional, dynamic, cooperative, and high-achieving work environment.
Requirements
- Technical background in system engineering and overall development of safety-critical systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Systems, Electrical, Computer), Computer Science, or a closely related field.
- 10-20 years of experience in development of software-based System applications.
- Knowledge of modern software engineering practices, methods, and tools.
- Knowledge of systems development life cycle.
- Expertise in URS (Urban Rail Signaling) Systems or equivalent industry - Minimum 2 years.
- Strong planning and organizational skills.
- Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
- Experience in the preparation of KPIs to track development progress.
- Experience in the preparation of development schedules and budgets.
- Experience in Change Management Leadership.
- Experience in process analysis to drive quality and efficiency improvements.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience managing a group of technical resources.
- Experience in using DOORS, Polarion, Melody advance, or other system design and requirement management tools.
- Strong application (automated train control systems) domain knowledge.
- Knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices.
- Knowledge of Rail Signaling.

- $185,000 - $210,000
