About the Role

The Technical Specialist is a subject matter expert and technical leader, responsible for producing complex Hardware Application designs and equipment designs that meet requirements using established engineering and railway signaling principles. This role involves leading technical decision-making, resolving complex problems, and interpreting requirements for hardware and software components.

Responsibilities

• Produce complex Hardware Application designs/Bookwirings and equipment designs.
• Act as a technical leader internally and with the customer.
• Lead technical decision making and provide technical direction.
• Resolve complex problems, in house or in the field.
• Interpret and write Requirements.
• Prepare specifications for hardware and/or software components.
• Select an appropriate design approach.
• Maximize the use of existing product designs.
• Perform the role of a Work Package Manager on projects.
• Collaborate with a team of 1 to 5 Designers.
• Assist with project-related tasks, such as planning timelines and tracking budgets.
• Keep track of progress on all tasks assigned to the SID project team.
• Ensure all project tasks proceed according to schedule, within budget, and in accordance with all requirements.
• Ensure all project deliverables are completed accurately and on time.
• Carry out all assigned work efficiently, with a minimum of supervision.
• Generate accurate, supportable estimates for current and new departmental technologies.
• Locate and research source documentation for design activities.
• Make timely decisions, both independently and in concert with others.
• Identify problems or inefficiencies in the department’s operation and suggest improvements.

Requirements

• Good understanding of SelTrac Signal Plans and SelTrac Radio equipment.
• Good knowledge of Railway infrastructure and deployment of trackside and equipment room assets within greenfield and brownfield deployments.
• Demonstrate an advanced level of logical reasoning resulting in effective hardware application designs, products and processes.
• Proficient in technical writing of technical design specifications, scope of works (SoWs) and requests for proposals (RFPs).
• High degree of familiarity with CENELEC and AREMA standards.
• Possess or gain the Hitachi Competency Management System (CMS) Designer or Principles license.
• Intimate understanding of Hitachi Work Instructions and the Chorus process.
• Proficient with the use of CAD tools (Microstation, AutoCad), Bills of Materials (SAP), Configuration Management, Hitachi Change Control Process (Clearquest), and Microsoft Office suite.
• Good interpersonal and diplomatic skills to deal confidently, courteously, and correctly with people at any level within the organization, and the customer.
• Well-developed verbal skills in English to interact effectively and professionally in a variety of forums.
• Well-developed writing skills in English to prepare clear effective documents.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Mentor junior or new members of the department.
• Maintain a high degree of professionalism in the job and in relations with others.
