About the Role
Sofar is seeking a world expert in ocean acoustics to define the research and development vision for our underwater acoustics platform. You will lead the strategy for detecting, classifying, and locating underwater objects while creating acoustic maps of the marine environment to support global ocean sensing networks.
Responsibilities
- Lead the acoustics research and development strategy and scientific vision.
- Develop capabilities for detecting, classifying, and localizing underwater objects using passive or active sensing.
- Advance methods for acoustic mapping, including ambient soundscape characterization and propagation analysis.
- Provide expertise on sensing system design, deployment strategy, and performance validation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate research into operational products.
- Coordinate and conduct field experiments, data analyses, and simulation studies.
- Define product requirements, technical roadmaps, and research priorities.
- Represent the company externally with customers, partners, and the scientific community.
Requirements
- Deep expertise in underwater acoustics.
- Experience developing acoustic sensing systems or algorithms for detection, classification, and mapping.
- Strong understanding of marine acoustic propagation, ambient noise, and signal processing.
- Experience working with real-world acoustic datasets and field deployments.
- Experience applying statistical signal processing, machine learning, or AI to acoustic inference.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams.
- Experience translating scientific research into operational products.
- Strong reputation within the ocean acoustics community.
- Experience leading externally funded research programs or strategic technical partnerships.
- Enthusiasm and experience in leveraging LLMs to magnify personal impact.
