About the Role

The Landscape Architect/Designer will collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and community members to execute landscape architectural activities for park, recreational, and open space improvement projects. This role focuses on providing project support and coordination for design and implementation, including offering park design services to the community.

Responsibilities

• Prepare conceptual plans, design development plans, construction drawings, and construction details for parkland and green spaces.
• Create maps, drawings, and illustrative exhibits using both manual and computerized methods.
• Develop and evaluate project plans, criteria, and scope of work documents.
• Prepare project schedules, reports, cost estimates, correspondence, and official documentation.
• Research and develop reports, cost estimates, and official documents.
• Design park concepts and project plans that integrate community feedback, site analysis, APR standards, and professional best practices.
• Provide technical design and graphic support to APF teams for marketing, communications, operations, and project implementation.
• Coordinate and direct design and consultant teams for park improvement projects.
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate project activities to meet deadlines.
• Lead and participate in project meetings with internal staff and external partners.
• Prepare and disseminate regular project status updates.
• Document construction progress and share with team and project partners.
• Monitor project budgets, process consultant and contractor invoices, and ensure timely payments.
• Assist with annual budget preparation and tracking of project funding needs.
• Support project grant pursuits.
• Track metrics of work performed and project performance.
• Support leadership at all stages of project implementation.
• Conduct field inspections to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
• Maintain adherence to City of Austin and APR standards.
• Provide technical advice and assistance to field personnel and contractors.
• Coordinate with City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department liaisons.
• Develop communication materials, plans, and images for public dissemination.
• Respond to citizen inquiries and provide assistance.
• Coordinate community engagement activities to support project design and implementation.
• Develop and implement community engagement plans.
• Coordinate with community groups and partners for outreach and feedback.
• Translate community engagement outcomes into official park adoption and approval documents.
• Serve as an ambassador for APF in the community.
• Gain knowledge of non-profit structure, management, and funding mechanisms.
• Support APF community events.
• Complete assigned duties, including marketing support and design input.

Requirements

• 3-5 years minimum of professional design experience with proven success in the complete design process.
• Currently on the path to licensure as a Registered Landscape Architect with the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners.
• Highly organized with multi-tasking skills.
• Team player with a passion for parks and community connection.
• Excellent collaboration skills and understanding of the value of partnerships.
• Ability to communicate professionally, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work on a small non-profit team and assist with various organizational needs.
• Flexibility and problem-solving abilities.
• Must reside in Austin, TX or the surrounding area.
• Must be able to attend site visits with potentially minimal notice.
• Required to work some evenings and weekends.
