About the Role
The Behavior Specialist serves as the subject matter expert in behavior support, social-emotional development, and inclusion practices. This role works with staff, families, and community partners to develop proactive systems that promote student success and staff confidence across afterschool, summer camp, and early learning programs.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement behavior support strategies, interventions, and individualized plans.
- Provide coaching, training, and support to staff on behavior management, trauma-informed care, and de-escalation.
- Build partnerships with families, schools, and community resources.
- Analyze behavior and incident data to monitor quality and identify trends.
- Conduct observations and assessments of program environments and student behaviors.
- Assist staff in identifying root causes of behavior and implementing preventative interventions.
- Support crisis intervention and de-escalation efforts.
- Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of behavior support plans.
- Train staff in Positive Behavior Supports, Trauma-Informed Care, TBRI principles, and restorative practices.
- Model effective behavior management practices.
- Develop behavior support resources and training materials.
- Serve as a liaison between families, school personnel, and staff.
- Participate in parent conferences and collaborative problem-solving meetings.
- Coordinate referrals to community resources.
- Ensure compliance with YMCA standards, licensing regulations, and grant requirements.
- Support program quality initiatives including YPQA and Summer Learning Program Quality Assessment.
- Collaborate with leadership to build behavior management capacity and strategic planning.
- Support staff retention by reducing behavior-related stress and burnout.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Child Development, Special Education, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years of experience working with children and youth in educational, afterschool, camp, or behavioral health settings.
- Experience developing and implementing behavior intervention plans.
- Experience coaching adults and facilitating training.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, talk, and occasionally lift or move items including equipment, furniture, and children.
