About the Role
The Children's Home of Poughkeepsie is seeking Youth Counselors to work in our Empower Program. Youth Counselors are responsible for the supervision of youth, organizing and completing day-to-day activities, and acting as a mentor.
Responsibilities
- Supervises and protects youth, assuring a healthy and safe environment.
- Provides trauma-responsive care sensitive to cultural and ethnic heritage.
- Teaches, assists, and supervises youth in daily living activities, including personal care, living space maintenance, mealtime, community and school activities, and recreation.
- Transports youth in agency vehicles.
- Assists youth in developing appropriate behavioral and pro-social skills.
- Models and engages youth in developing skills and interests in leisure time activities.
- Assists youth in developing positive attitudes towards school and good study habits.
- Supports and aids youth's academic needs, including vocational/workforce training.
- Models and assists youth in developing and maintaining positive peer and adult relationships.
- Supports youth in meeting treatment team recommendations.
Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Capable of vigorous physical activity, active participation in recreation, and the physical crisis intervention program.
- Capable of evacuating children in an emergency via all primary and secondary exits.
- Positive, friendly attitude toward children.
- Valid New York State Driver's License with a good driving record.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and able to provide Form I-9 information.
