About the Role
Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) seeks an Investigator to join the Investigation Unit within the Criminal Defense Practice. The Investigation Unit works closely with criminal defense attorneys to uncover facts and witnesses, supporting zealous defense and optimal client outcomes. Investigators, under the Director of Investigations, help gather information to ensure high-quality client representation.
Responsibilities
- Locate, interview, and take detailed statements from witnesses and other relevant parties.
- Obtain and review video surveillance footage.
- Photograph and diagram crime scenes.
- Testify in court to introduce investigation findings.
- Serve subpoenas.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience.
- New York Process Server License, or willingness to obtain within six months.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a client-centered defense team.
- Maintain confidentiality of all case information.
- Prior experience in a litigation or investigative environment is preferred.
- Strong analytical skills and creative problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to follow leads effectively.
- Strong interpersonal skills for approaching and interacting with strangers on sensitive subjects.
- Skill in building trust and eliciting information from individuals.
- Excellent judgment for handling confidential and sensitive issues.
- Ability to take detailed notes and write summaries for attorneys and testimony.
- Capacity to manage multiple tasks concurrently and organize work for timely and accurate completion.
