About the Role
Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) seeks a Social Work Supervisor to join the Homicide Unit in Brooklyn. BDS is a public defense office dedicated to representing low-income New Yorkers and advocating for systemic change. The Homicide Unit is an interdisciplinary team, and this role will work collaboratively with attorneys, social workers, and other staff, reporting to the Social Work Director for Criminal Defense.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with attorneys, paralegals, investigators, and support staff to ensure clients receive optimal representation and available resources.
- Provide direct supervision and regular feedback to social workers and social work assistants within the Homicide Unit.
- Assign cases and monitor caseloads for supervisees.
- Review and edit all written advocacy materials before submission.
- Monitor staff case files and documentation on case management systems for accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure adequate client interaction and support, including in-person visits to Rikers Island.
- Provide crisis intervention and respond to emergencies.
- Maintain a reduced personal caseload as necessary.
- Collaborate with the Managing Director to foster team cohesion.
- Partner with other BDS social work supervisors to develop agency-wide strategies and conduct trainings.
- Attend relevant staff, team, and agency meetings.
- Apply BDS policies and procedures, including personnel and office policies, and serve as an ADP supervisor.
- Promote a supportive, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
- Perform other assigned responsibilities.
Requirements
- New York State Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW).
- Five years of experience working with clients in the criminal legal system.
- Experience working with incarcerated individuals.
- Prior social work supervisory experience.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Knowledge of DSM-5 psychological, behavioral, and neurological disorders, as well as intergenerational and complex trauma.
- Willingness to actively participate in case discussions and strategy with multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong crisis intervention, safety planning, and client advocacy skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.
- SIFI Certified or willingness to obtain certification.
