About the Role
HRUK leverages data science and actuarial expertise to support pricing, risk management, and strategic decision-making. This 3-year fixed-term contract role involves developing and embedding data science tools and techniques to quantify mortality and morbidity risk, directly supporting pricing and assumption setting. The role requires building data analytics infrastructure, using version control and DevOps practices, and applying data science techniques to generate robust, well-documented insights. It is a highly collaborative role with scope for involvement in expert networks and conferences, designed to develop technical, commercial, and stakeholder management skills.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain HRUK analytics infrastructure (databases, R packages and Apps).
- Research and analyze insurance and health data, and conduct analysis of client data and the in-force portfolio to explore trends and patterns.
- Contribute to the development of analytical techniques and models to enhance HRUK’s understanding of biometric and behavioural insurance risks and support the development of the Central Bases and assumptions.
- Manage own work priorities and work in a highly organised way, managing colleagues’ expectations.
- Apply and develop data science techniques within HRUK, including those that create efficiency improvements and provide data insights.
- Undertake analysis of client data to support pricing activity.
- Create material for marketing and client presentations on research topics.
- Develop relationships and collaborate with internal and external partners (industry, academic, actuarial, medical and other organisations) to improve HRUK’s understanding of Data Science and Biometric Risk.
- Ensure documentation of own work and output is accurate, up-to-date and accessible.
- Identify and enhance the quality and value of processes for the department.
- Adhere to all Local and Group Guidelines.
- Contribute to strategic, research and business initiatives across the Branch, applying analytical skills to a wide variety of commercial and operational challenges.
Requirements
- Minimum of an Upper Second Class (2:1) degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science, or related field.
- PhD in a relevant field such as computer science, epidemiology or statistics.
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a data analytics role or PhD.
- (Re)insurance experience desirable.
- Healthcare and medical data experience desirable.
Skills
- Knowledge of at least one scripting language (R or Python).
- Basic knowledge of SQL.
- Knowledge of data science and statistical techniques including GLM and tree-based models.
- Experience with cloud services, DevOps and Git version control desirable.
- Experience building Apps is desirable.
- Ability to translate analytical findings into business recommendations and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Excellent data analytics skills, with the ability to think analytically and creatively.
- Strong problem-solving ability and intellectual curiosity.
- Pragmatic approach to developing solutions and capable of adapting new techniques and approaches to deliver business value.
- Accountable for own delivery to support overall Branch priorities and objectives.
- Works in an efficient and responsive manner to ensure deadlines are met.

Experience Level
