About the Role
The Commodities tribe at Kpler runs production ML models for Product Estimation, Destination Forecast, and ETA predictions across LNG, DRY, LPG, and LIQUIDS. These predictions are crucial for Kpler's cargo intelligence platform, serving market analysts, trading desks, and global customers. You will be responsible for the science behind these models, including feature design, experimentation, and improving prediction accuracy, coverage, and reliability within a production system.
Responsibilities
- Own the feature engineering roadmap for ETA & Destination Forecast across all 4 commodity types.
- Propose and implement new features as dbt models using Airflow to orchestrate data pipelines.
- Validate feature impact through structured experiments.
- Design and run experiments using kpler-ml framework, logging all runs and producing comparison reports against the production baseline.
- Work directly with Commodities Market Analysts and product stakeholders to prioritize the experiment backlog based on commercial impact.
- Contribute to the drift monitoring setup, validating thresholds and defining meaningful drift signals.
- Document experiment decisions in MLflow and Confluence documents.
Requirements
- 2+ years applying ML to real-world production problems.
- Experience with geospatial or sequential data (e.g., vessel trajectories, routing patterns, H3/S2 grid systems).
- Python proficiency for implementing features, writing dbt models, and scripting experiments.
- Familiarity with MLflow or equivalent experiment tracking tools.
- Desirable: Domain knowledge of maritime shipping, commodity trading, or cargo intelligence.
- Desirable: Familiarity with Redshift or columnar warehouses for large-scale feature queries and dbt.
