About the Role

The MAI Futures team is looking for a Member of the Futures Team (Frontier Risk & Alignment) to research, inform, and prepare Microsoft AI and the broader ecosystem for the future of AI and society. You will lead research anticipating risks of advanced AI systems, translate findings into publications, and inform Microsoft's technical and operational workstreams.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and lead world-class, time-sensitive research in frontier risk and alignment with direct industry relevance.
  • Produce high-quality deliverables including papers, whitepapers, internal memos, blog posts, and briefings on frontier safety, alignment, and normative model behavior.
  • Define normative alignment positions, contribute to value alignment approaches, and provide philosophical grounding for frontier model behavior.
  • Inform applied safety and governance efforts, including technical evaluation, mitigation, Microsoft's Frontier Governance Framework, model release readiness, and day-to-day governance.
  • Collaborate with internal Microsoft teams such as technical model teams, Responsible AI, Public Policy, red teaming, and security.
  • Build and manage a network of external research partners and represent Microsoft in key frontier risk forums and conferences.
  • Embody company culture and values.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in a related field, or an advanced degree with equivalent research experience.
  • Research experience in one or more of: Frontier AI safety or governance; Agentic AI safety, collaboration, or societal implications; Alignment; Philosophical and ethical aspects of AI; Institutional preparedness for advanced AI.
  • Deep expertise in frontier risk vectors, frameworks, regulation, or evaluation and mitigation pathways.
  • Track record of writing and thought leadership across various formats (academic papers, books, journalism, public-facing work on AI and society).
  • Sufficient technical understanding of AI and proven ability to collaborate with technical stakeholders, anticipate risks, and inform mitigation efforts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Peer-reviewed publications in leading venues (preferred).
  • Experience with frontier safety governance or research in leading labs, think tanks, or academic institutions (preferred).
  • Applied experience developing or informing alignment frameworks, model specs, novel evaluations, or technical mitigations (preferred).
  • Research spanning both empirical and conceptual work on the future impact of AI (preferred).
