About the Role
The Recreationist contributes to recreation planning and conducts recreation activities with groups at the Day Program. The Recreationist also organizes and promotes both research and evidence-based programs while taking into account the needs and interests of the clients.
Responsibilities
- Ensure that Day Program facilities are operated and maintained effectively and safely.
- Assist in the preparation and development of the monthly calendars/letters.
- Ensure policies and regulations are adhered to.
- Monitor the use of recreation equipment and facilities.
- Work effectively with all staff to ensure the safety and well-being of the clients.
- Conduct morning meeting with all staff and students to plan the day.
- Research, develop, implement and evaluate evidence-based programs for clients.
- Perform ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of programs and adjust program areas.
- Schedule programs, entertainment, students, and volunteers.
- Manage orientation and supervision of volunteers and students.
- Oversee the purchase, planning, design, construction, and upkeep of recreation facilities.
- Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in recreational activities and demonstrate use of materials and equipment.
- Actively participate in team initiatives and meetings.
- Build support for agency vision and departmental goals/objectives by communicating, collaborating, and leading by example.
- Build rapport with team members to ensure a high performing team.
- Look for daily opportunities to highlight the connection between overall strategy and day-to-day activities.
- Act as a change agent to positively encourage others and manage change.
- Identify and report health and safety incidents and concerns in a timely manner.
- Participate in health and safety processes and procedures.
- Participate in maintaining a safe workplace environment by cultivating a positive safety culture and encouraging best practices.
- Participate in all health and safety training initiatives on a regular basis.
- Take proactive action against client incidents within your scope of practice.
- Develop a plan to identify, manage and/or minimize client safety risks or situations.
- Assess the severity of an adverse client safety/risk event and determine the best follow-up and develop an action plan.
- Call emergency services (911) when the client is at an immediate risk of harming themselves or others, or if there is a serious injury and/or imminent harm.
- Evaluate any potential hazards and identify clients at risk for adverse health and safety events, taking preventative measures when necessary.
- Report all safety events impacting clients, caregivers and families in a timely and honest disclosure.
Requirements
- Degree in Recreation Therapy or completion of 2 years community college in Recreation Therapy.
- Professional member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO).
- Basic Cardiac Life Support Certified.
- Experience working with frail and impaired elderly and their families, seniors who have Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
- Experience in recreational programming for seniors.
- Intermediate communication and writing skills, including computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team, sound work ethics and dedication.
- Able to work occasional evenings on a rotational basis.
