About the Role

This role supports the EU & UK Intellectual Property practice group, contributing to the Firm's knowledge and innovation strategy. The Professional Support Lawyer (PSL) will focus on IP law and practice, monitoring legal developments, providing expertise to the group, and mentoring junior lawyers. The role involves managing legal resources, organizing training, and identifying business development opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Be a source of legal, market, and practical expertise for the Group and the Firm.
  • Provide direct support for client matters where appropriate.
  • Identify practice-related training needs and organize, design, and deliver Group training.
  • Develop global training programmes with the wider Professional Support team.
  • Participate in Firmwide training programmes, including core training and induction courses.
  • Mentor trainees and associates.
  • Monitor and inform the Group and Professional Support team about important legal or business developments.
  • Identify trends in law or business, focusing on EU IP law, to develop new legal products and services.
  • Suggest innovative ways to deliver Firm services more efficiently.
  • Prepare current awareness newsletters for the Group and clients.
  • Implement processes for practice-related current awareness and alerts.
  • Author and publish research on legal developments or new areas of law.
  • Participate in industry events to raise the Firm’s profile.
  • Identify opportunities to develop business from new and existing clients.
  • Draft standard forms and develop accompanying notes, ensuring updates reflect changes in law and best practice.
  • Conduct matter debriefs for precedent collection and market analysis.
  • Create practice notes and other useful know-how.
  • Implement procedures for capturing, filtering, storing, accessing, and disseminating know-how.
  • Publish material on the Firm’s intranet and KM systems.
  • Encourage fee-earners to use KM systems and other resources.
  • Champion the rollout of new innovation/AI or knowledge systems to the Group.
  • Contribute to global innovation/AI and knowledge programmes and projects.
  • Assist lawyers with queries.
  • Attend regular global, regional, and practice meetings of the Professional Support team.
  • Attend external training and conferences to stay updated on legal and business developments.

Requirements

  • Sound legal experience in Intellectual Property (contentious or non-contentious, preferably both) in a large law firm.
  • At least six years’ post qualification experience.
  • Commercial awareness and client-oriented approach.
  • High professional standards with commitment to quality product.
  • Excellent drafting and research skills.
  • Well-developed organizational and communication skills.
  • Understanding of the learning process and different ways of training.
  • Personality to make an impact and shape/influence policy.
  • Effective people skills and ability to interact with people at all levels.
  • Pragmatic, initiative-taking, flexible, and a good team player.
  • Lateral thinker with initiative to establish, implement, and complete projects.
  • Comfortable with IT and familiar with market trends in AI/Innovation technologies.
  • Ideally exposed to matters involving intellectual property at the highest level.
