About the Role

The Director, Finance Japan will oversee finance operations, controls, financial and tax reporting, and financial planning and analysis for RGA's business in Japan. This role supports the CFO Japan in managing the entire finance function for both onshore and offshore entities, requiring effective team management and collaboration with business and functional leaders. The position ensures compliance with Japanese regulatory requirements, US GAAP, and SOX, and involves interaction with regulators and business leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage accounting and financial reporting for RGA Japan Branch.
  • Provide oversight to ensure key accounting controls and financial integrity are in place.
  • Ensure adherence to Japan statutory accounting requirements and RGA accounting policies.
  • Prepare high-quality financial reports for stakeholders, including the Japan Management Board and regulators.
  • Identify improvements to financial reporting and management systems to support decision-making and business strategy.
  • Oversee and review SOX scope, compliance, risks, and controls for Japan business operations.
  • Collaborate with the actuarial valuation team to understand business performance trends and implications.
  • Work with valuation, finance, auditors, administration, and compliance to ensure strong collaboration and understanding of finance processes and controls.
  • Lead and manage the preparation of tax reporting for RGA Japan in collaboration with global and regional tax teams.
  • Maintain understanding and controls over business flow and expense recharge processes for accurate tax reporting.
  • Maintain documentation for compliance with tax transfer pricing policies.
  • Lead discussions with auditors from the National Tax Audit.
  • Maintain understanding of reporting bases between J-stat, Tax, and US GAAP.
  • Lead the financial planning and budgeting process for Japan legal entity regulatory and tax purposes.
  • Support the financial planning and budgeting process for the Japan business unit.
  • Conduct regular operating expense reviews and analysis to identify efficiency improvements and tax implications.
  • Produce updated financial forecasts to support local, regional, and global processes.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership to develop and foster engagement with the Finance team.
  • Collaborate with audit and compliance functions to provide oversight and support to local management.
  • Act as a risk owner for Finance-related risks and participate in the Japan Audit & Risk Management Committee meeting.
  • Support the Japan Investment Committee process and meeting.
  • Collaborate with the valuation function on financial reporting for coordinated efforts in reporting controls.
  • Participate in ad hoc projects as a Finance business partner.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Actuarial Science (other degrees considered).
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant experience in Accounting/Finance, preferably in reinsurance or the life insurance industry.
  • Fluent Japanese language skills are required.
  • Basic/conversational English is an advantage.
  • Experience in viewing the business strategically with input to future development.
  • Knowledge and experience in Japanese accounting requirements, US GAAP, and IFRS 17 (advantageous).
  • Chartered Accountant or CPA, Actuarial, CFA, or equivalent qualifications.
  • Strong potential to build, lead, mentor, and develop a professional team, including delegation.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to build professional relationships across various departments and stakeholders.
  • High level of personal accountability and integrity.
