About the Role

The After School Program Assistant maintains safety and supports the program lead in providing a consistently well-run, high-quality program for school-age children.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in an After School Program for school-age children (4-12 years) based on provided guidelines.
  • Supervise children to ensure their safety and well-being at all times.
  • Prepare healthy snacks according to provided healthy eating guidelines.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Assist and support children with homework and other academic activities.
  • Offer and engage children in physical activity programs, indoors or outdoors.
  • Implement art, STEM, nutrition, cooking, anti-bullying, and health information activities, social skills, and other required curriculums.
  • Maintain up-to-date program records, including attendance.
  • Assist in creating weekly program plans.
  • Communicate with parents/caregivers and teachers daily to provide updates on children.
  • Offer online programs as required.
  • Set up and prepare classrooms according to provided policies and guidelines.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience working with school-age children in a recreation or academic setting.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Strong academic skills and ability to help with homework (Kindergarten to grade 6).
  • Ability to lead physical activity, health, nutrition, and social skills activities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Experience working with children with extra support needs is an asset.
  • Knowledge of nutrition and healthy eating.
  • Food handler’s certificates are an asset.
  • High Five (Principles of Healthy Child Development) Training Certificate is required.
  • Computer coding and experience with Scratch and Python is an asset.
  • Occupational Health and Safety (WHMIS) certificate required.
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid/ CPR Level C required.
  • Acceptable Vulnerable Police Record Check.
