About the Role
The Direct Support Professional for Community Habilitation at The Arc Ontario provides individualized support that helps people build daily living skills, increase independence, and participate more fully in their community. This role allows you to explore and experience your community in a new way while teaching practical skills like cooking, exercising, organizing, and other everyday abilities that help people reach their personal goals. Every day is filled with adventures, teaching moments, and meaningful relationships as you support individuals in trying new activities, strengthening confidence, and navigating real‑life experiences. Responsibilities
- Provides hands-on assistance, instruction, and training to individuals to develop and/or acquire skills in various aspects of daily living, including communication, social, recreational, and leisure activities, self or personal care, household management, travel, work-related or vocational opportunities, and money management, in accordance with an individualized plan of service and all safety considerations.
- Accompanies individuals to community activities for supervision, skills training, support, or assistance, such as grocery shopping, banking, recreation, entertainment, and medical appointments.
- Assists in planning group leisure activities, recreational events, community activities, career exploration, and internship coaching at the request of the site supervisor.
- Serves as a role model for individuals receiving supports, demonstrating respect and appropriate social or other behaviors for the program or community setting.
- Serves as a role model for other staff by utilizing trained techniques.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years old.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- One year of relevant experience or an equivalent amount of education/experience preferred.
- If driving is required, must have a reliable means of transportation, a NYS driver's license, and a safe driving record for 1 full year prior to the hire date.
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
