About the Role
The Staff Software Engineer on the Core team owns the foundational platform that nearly every other system at the company is built on. This role involves architecting and leading the development of backend services, APIs, data models, and integrations, driving technical strategy, and contributing to the organization’s long-term architectural vision. The engineer collaborates in a cross-functional, agile AI-first environment, mentors other engineers, and fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration. This role is expected to build and use AI capabilities and infrastructure, and fundamentally change how work is done using AI coding tools.
Responsibilities
- Own the core platform end-to-end, including architecting, building, and shipping services, APIs, and data models.
- Drive platform technical strategy by identifying innovation opportunities and leading the adoption of new technologies.
- Build the AI foundation for the company by standing up infrastructure, services, and patterns for AI integration.
- Engineer for scale, reliability, and security, treating performance, observability, data integrity, and secure coding as first-class concerns.
- Own the contracts other teams build on by designing clean, well-versioned APIs and integrations.
- Own reliability in the wild by managing CI/CD, monitoring, and incident response.
- Take ownership of large, ambiguous initiatives and break them into actionable workstreams.
- Mentor and raise the bar for engineers through code reuse patterns, rigorous code review, and testing practices.
- Collaborate with product and leadership across every line of business to align technical solutions with business priorities.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep expertise building production backend systems in JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js) and the surrounding service ecosystem.
- A proven track record of designing, shipping, and maintaining complex, data-heavy, high-throughput platforms in production at scale.
- Platform and systems architecture mastery, including designing APIs, data models, and service boundaries.
- Deep understanding of secure coding practices, data integrity, performance optimization, and observability and debugging tools.
- Full lifecycle ownership, including building and running services reliably in production, owning CI/CD pipelines, error rates, and service behavior under load.
- Experience where workflow has been altered by AI, using frontier agentic coding tools and understanding how they have structurally changed work.
- Demonstrated technical leadership, including setting technical direction, designing scalable architecture, and leveling up engineers.
- A high-ownership mindset with a bias toward action, comfort operating in ambiguity, and the ability to balance technical and business considerations.
- Experience building or operating AI/LLM infrastructure for other engineering teams.
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with low ego and high standards.
