About the Role

The Staff Software Engineer on the Color Cloud team owns the technology that runs Madison Reed's Hair Color Bars. This role involves architecting and leading the development of systems powering the in-store experience, driving technical strategy for Hair Color Bar operations, and contributing to the organization’s long-term architectural vision. The engineer collaborates in an agile, AI-first environment to ship reliable, fast tools for in-store staff, while mentoring and inspiring other engineers. The role also focuses on building AI-powered experiences into the colorist and store toolset, including color formulation, consultation, and operational copilots, utilizing frontier agentic coding tools.

Responsibilities

  • Own the Color Cloud platform end-to-end, architecting, building, and shipping it while making foundational technical decisions.
  • Drive technical strategy for in-store systems, identifying innovation opportunities and leading the adoption of new technologies.
  • Build AI-powered experiences for colorists, integrating LLM-backed features into their workflow.
  • Engineer for physical store realities, prioritizing reliability, offline resilience, payments, and hardware integrations.
  • Champion UX and performance for working professionals, focusing on latency, responsiveness, error recovery, and accessibility.
  • Own reliability in the wild, treating CI/CD, monitoring, analytics, and release management as fundamental parts of the job.
  • Take ownership of large, ambiguous initiatives and break them into actionable workstreams.
  • Mentor and raise the bar for engineers through code reuse, rigorous code review, and testing practices.
  • Collaborate with product, operations, and leadership to align technical solutions with business priorities.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep expertise building production systems in JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js, React).
  • A proven track record of building, shipping, and maintaining complex, data-heavy applications in production at scale.
  • Mission-critical systems experience, designing for reliability, graceful degradation, and recovery.
  • Mastery of state and performance, understanding render cycles and orchestrating asynchronous data flows.
  • Strong command of TypeScript and API design.
  • Full lifecycle ownership, including CI/CD pipeline, error rates, and software behavior in the real world.
  • Experience using frontier agentic coding tools and ability to describe how they have structurally changed work.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, including setting technical direction and designing scalable architecture.
  • A high-ownership mindset with a bias toward action, comfort operating in ambiguity, and strong product intuition.
  • Experience building or operating AI/LLM infrastructure (agent frameworks, eval pipelines, retrieval/RAG, prompt and tool-call tooling).
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with low ego and high standards.
