About the Role

The Lead HVAC Mechanic will be responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all types of HVAC equipment at a journeyman level of service, including air-conditioning, refrigeration, and HVAC control systems. This role involves assisting the Chief Engineer and Project Manager with work order assignments and training new staff.

Responsibilities

• Performs maintenance, diagnostic testing, overhauling, installation, and repairs on a wide variety of refrigeration, dehumidification, air-conditioning, ventilation, and heating systems equipment and controls.
• Researches specifications and makes installation corrections to ensure proper equipment function.
• Performs preventative maintenance, including changing filters and cleaning cooling towers and coils.
• Performs various building maintenance tasks, including adjustments and repairs to HVAC and Electrical systems.
• Makes decisions and provides recommendations concerning HVAC operations and maintenance.
• Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork and chassis parts using metalworking tools and welding equipment.
• Installs evaporator units in chassis or air-duct systems.
• Cuts and bends tubing to the correct length and shape.
• Cuts and threads pipe.
• Joins tubing or pipes to refrigerating units and solders joints to form a complete refrigerant circuit.
• Installs expansion and discharge valves.
• Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power sources.
• Installs air and water filters.
• Injects refrigerant into compressors to test systems and adds Freon gas.
• Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls for proper operation.
• Tests joints and connections for gas leaks.
• Wraps pipes in insulation and secures them.
• Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.
• Performs minor plumbing duties such as repairing pipes, fixing leaks, unclogging drains, and replacing plumbing fixtures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of 4 years of progressive, hands-on experience in commercial or industrial settings within the past 7 years.
• Experience leading a team of skilled tradesmen or technicians.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English.
• Ability to communicate with a variety of coworkers and government stakeholders.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics.
• Ability to effectively complete tasks in a team setting or independently.
• Must have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and work from heights.
• Must be able to work on roofs of buildings.
• Must be physically capable of traveling.
• Must have the ability to maintain assigned work hours.
• Must have sufficient endurance to perform tasks over a long period of time.
• Must have the ability to climb ladders of varying heights.
• Must be able to perform work while wearing all required PPE.
• Must be willing to accept requirements and participate in training for Confined Space, including breathing apparatus fit testing.
• Once certified, must be willing to work in confined spaces.
