About the Role

SOM is seeking a leader to actively lead projects, drive innovation, and ensure design, technical, and financial success. This role involves developing project plans, managing client relationships, and overseeing financial performance while fostering a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Actively leads a project or distinct portions of a project with periodic supervision.
  • Exhibits initiative, process innovation, problem solving, and decision quality.
  • Envisions and develops diagrams, renders site plans, and contributes to graphic and visual production.
  • Demonstrates an advanced understanding of planning and urban design concepts, building typologies, and systems.
  • Prepares quality agreements with clients, including letters of intent and professional service agreements.
  • Executes additional service agreements and gains authorization by phase.
  • Collaborates with Partners and senior team to prepare, issue, and manage compliance plans.
  • Gains agreement with the senior team for labor allocation.
  • Chairs weekly team meetings to address variances from the project plan.
  • Administers internal control procedures including billing, collections, and expense management.
  • Analyzes project reports and proactively manages project profitability.
  • Participates actively in project design and technical discussions.
  • Communicates actively through chairing meetings, issuing minutes, and maintaining project records.
  • Assists in managing the owner/client relationship and expectations.
  • Participates in new business and marketing efforts.
  • Initiates, monitors, and maintains project schedule and work plan.
  • Schedules and leads internal team weekly project meetings.
  • Initiates, monitors, and maintains project plan and financial performance.
  • Initiates and maintains SOM-Client Services Agreement and Sub-Consultant Agreements.
  • Monitors scope for contract compliance and potential additional services.
  • Engages in project risk management through collaboration with SOM Partners and legal group.
  • Manages time and workload of own work efforts and those of others.
  • Inspires and leads others by example.
  • Participates in staff mentoring and training.
  • Clearly defines team member expectations and responsibilities.
  • Empowers others and delegates where appropriate.
  • Directly supervises staff and is committed to direct reports’ professional development.
  • Develops and engages in talent strategy for the firm.
  • Develops a clear and consistent work plan to achieve project budget, deliverables, and schedule.
  • Actively engages in internal and external professional development opportunities.
  • Contributes to the implementation of sustainable strategies in all project assignments.
  • Contributes to the development of standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Protects SOM from financial and legal risk.

Requirements

  • Professional Degree in Architecture, Urban or City Planning, Urban Design, or Landscape Architecture.
  • Professional licensure process is close to completion.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience or equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Experience in large-scale planning, mixed-use and transit-oriented development in North America.
  • Demonstrated facility working in a fast-paced and intensely collaborative professional environment.
  • International project experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead project teams and manage project schedule, budget and program.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • General understanding of both urban planning / design and sustainable strategies and principles.
  • Familiarity with LEED or other green building rating systems.
  • Familiarity with Deltek Vision and Salesforce are highly desirable.
  • International travel will be required.
  • Portfolios must be submitted for all design and project management positions.
  • Applications without work samples will not be reviewed.
  • Portfolios should be one PDF attachment, 10-20 pages, maximum 5 MB.
