Responsibilities

  • Carry out routine repairs and improvements across all sites including carpentry, minor plumbing, painting, decorating, and fixing fittings.
  • Maintain external areas and structures, including woodwork, sheds, fencing, canopies, gutters, and roof drainage.

  • Perform out-of-hours and emergency call-outs, including work that cannot be done while children are present.
  • Triage incoming jobs to determine in-house vs. specialist work.
  • Scope larger and capital works, obtain and compare quotes, and make recommendations.

  • Plan and sequence disruptive works around nursery hours, utilizing school holidays or weekends.
  • Manage projects to stay on time and budget, providing progress updates.
  • Ensure all regulated work is performed by certified trades.
  • Coordinate statutory and landlord processes such as planning permission, Building Control, Licences to Alter, and Fire Risk Assessment actions.
  • Assist in maintaining premises compliance for Ofsted and health-and-safety requirements.
  • Maintain records, certificates, and warranties.
  • Own and update the maintenance tracking system (Trello).
  • Create and maintain a planned (preventive) maintenance program across all sites.
  • Track spend against budget and flag variances.
  • Build positive working relationships with nursery managers, colleagues, contractors, landlords, and Directors.
  • Coordinate and support colleagues to allow focus on practical work.
  • Optimize in-house time by deciding on direct handling vs. specialist outsourcing.

Requirements

  • Proven hands-on maintenance / trades background with a broad practical skill set.
  • Experience managing building or refurbishment projects: scoping, quoting, and appointing and supervising contractors.
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, and decorating.
  • Sound working understanding of building compliance including Building Regulations, planning, and fire-safety basics.
  • Highly organized and self-managing; able to run several sites and priorities independently.
