About the Role
The Associate Director of Development I (ADoD) implements and coordinates multi-year donor strategies and secures philanthropic support from individual donors and foundations. This role is part of a team raising $45 million+ annually for the One Future: Together We Find A Way Campaign, aiming for $500 million+ from the NY Global Market. The ADoD will manage a portfolio across multiple geographies and collaborate with program directors.
Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of 75 – 125 donors, including those with the capacity to give over $100,000.
- Conduct 75 – 125 visits and 225 – 375 moves annually.
- Achieve an annual fundraising goal of $500,000 or more, plus a goal for bequest notifications.
- Act independently and exercise judgment to identify and solve problems, with decisions potentially impacting the program wide, financially, or legally.
- Handle confidential information with sensitivity.
- Ensure compliance with TNC policies, procedures, and external requirements.
- Manage assigned projects, coordinating peers and setting deadlines.
- May manage or participate in complex or sensitive negotiations.
- Persuasively convey TNC's mission to diverse groups.
- Travel frequently and on short notice, working long and flexible hours as needed.
- Build a portfolio of qualified donors and develop relationships.
- Understand and apply donor strategy principles.
- Execute solicitations supporting global and local priorities.
- Identify opportunities for gifts of assets or other non-cash gifts, such as planned gifts and trade lands.
- Provide opportunities for donor recognition and increased future giving, including planned gifts.
- Involve and update conservation, policy partners, and global team members on interactions and issues.
- Feature Conservancy programs in broad terms.
- Engage volunteers within formal and/or informal networks.
- Be proficient and comfortable with the Conservancy’s donor database.
- Participate in the development of written proposals as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination.
- Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents.
- Experience in asking for and closing gifts of $100,000 or more.
- Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in fundraising principles and practices.
- Valid driver's license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program.
- Completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

- Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
- Ability to implement and manage fundraising plans, including individualized cultivation, solicitation and recognition plans.
- Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts or planned giving.
- Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and volunteers.
- Proven ability to negotiate high profile or sensitive agreements.
- Working knowledge of the basics of charitable gift planning.
