About the Role

Emergency Medical Technicians-Basic (EMT-B) respond to emergency calls to provide immediate care to the critically ill and injured, and to transport patients to a medical facility. This role involves responding to calls, assessing patient conditions, providing care using prescribed techniques and equipment, and ensuring patient safety during transport.

Responsibilities

• Respond to emergency calls when dispatched.
• Provide immediate care to the critically ill and injured.

• Assess the safety of the scene and gain access to the patient.
• Assess the extent of injury or illness.
• Communicate with dispatch for additional assistance.
• Determine the nature of illness or injury.
• Use prescribed techniques and equipment for patient care.

• Assess and monitor vital signs and patient status.
• Reassure patients, family members, and bystanders.
• Assist with lifting, carrying, and loading patients into the ambulance.
• Determine the appropriate medical facility for transport.

• Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the ambulance, equipment, and supplies.

Requirements

• Complete the Application for Emergency Medical Services Certification (DOH-65).
• Be Certified by New York State at an EMT-B provider level.
• Communicate effectively via telephone and radio equipment.
• Lift, carry, and balance up to 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance).
• Interpret oral, written, and diagnostic form instructions.
• Use good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations.
• Be unaffected by loud noises and flashing lights.
• Function efficiently without interruption throughout an entire work shift.
• Read English language, manuals, and road maps.
• Accurately discern street signs and addresses.
• Interview patients, patient family members, and bystanders.
• Document all relevant information in the prescribed format.
• Converse in English with coworkers and hospital staff.
• Demonstrate competency in patient assessment.
• Handle emergencies using Basic Life Support equipment and techniques.
• Perform CPR.
• Control bleeding.
• Provide non-invasive treatment of hypo perfusion.
• Stabilize and immobilize injured bones and the spine.
• Manage environmental emergencies.
• Handle emergency childbirth.
• Use a semi-automatic defibrillator.
• Assist patients with self-administration or administer emergency medications as described in state and local protocol.
• Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, talk, hear, and smell.
• Frequently required to stand and reach with hands and arms.
• Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Frequently lift and/or move 125 lbs without assistance and 250 lbs with assistance.
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Frequently works in outside weather conditions.
• Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
• Occasionally exposed to wet/humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles.
• Occasionally works in high, precarious places.
• Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration.
• Noise level is usually moderate to loud.
