About the Role
We are seeking a Structural Engineer to join our Rail & Transit team, supporting the planning, design, assessment and delivery of structural works across a range of railway projects. This role will contribute to complex and multidisciplinary assignments involving rail corridor infrastructure, bridges, retaining walls, tunnels, stations, ancillary structures, and rehabilitation or upgrade works associated with passenger and freight rail systems. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with internal teams, clients, contractors and stakeholders to deliver technically robust and commercially sound solutions that advance mobility outcomes for communities. The ideal candidate brings strong structural engineering fundamentals, experience in transportation or railway environments, and a passion for delivering safe, integrated and sustainable infrastructure solutions.
Responsibilities
- Support the planning, analysis, design, and delivery of structural components across a range of railway and transit projects.
- Contribute to new build, rehabilitation, and asset renewal programs, including structural designs for railway bridges and culverts, retaining walls, tunnels and underground structures, station and platform structures, signal foundations, equipment support structures, wayside assets, and other ancillary civil and structural rail infrastructure.
- Prepare and review design calculations, technical reports, drawings, specifications, and contract documents in accordance with applicable codes, standards, client requirements, and railway-specific design criteria.
- Undertake condition assessments, inspections, structural evaluations, and rehabilitation recommendations for existing railway assets.
- Collaborate with track, civil, geotechnical, drainage, systems, signalling, electrical, and roadway disciplines to develop integrated design solutions.
- Participate in design reviews, interdisciplinary coordination meetings, risk reviews, and constructability assessments.
- Support effective project delivery through careful management of scope, deliverables, schedules, and budgets, with a continued focus on technical quality and client satisfaction.
- Provide support during procurement and construction phases, including shop drawing reviews, responses to RFIs, field reviews, and site support as required.
- Contribute to proposals, technical approaches, and client presentations for new opportunities.
- Help promote a culture of health and safety, technical excellence, innovation, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
- Build trusted relationships with clients and project teams and represent Arcadis with professionalism and integrity.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering
- Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) or eligibility for registration with the applicable provincial engineering association
- Progressive experience in structural engineering design and delivery, preferably in rail, transit, transportation, or other linear infrastructure environments
- Demonstrated experience with structural analysis, design, and detailing of steel, concrete, masonry, and/or timber structures
- Knowledge of applicable Canadian design codes and standards, including structural and transportation-related requirements
- Familiarity with rail authority, transit agency, or owner requirements is considered a strong asset
- Experience undertaking inspections, evaluations, and rehabilitation design for existing assets is an asset
- Strong understanding of multidisciplinary project delivery in complex infrastructure settings
- Proficiency with structural engineering software and design tools relevant to analysis and documentation
- Experience with BIM / digital delivery environments and coordination platforms is an asset
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear technical documentation and engage effectively with clients and stakeholders
