About the Role
We are seeking a Head of Finance to build our finance function from scratch. As our first finance hire, you will write the playbook, assessing our current standing, deciding what to build, and then constructing the accounting infrastructure, FP&A, tax and compliance, and investor relations. You will start as a team of one, being hands-on across all aspects, and grow the function by hiring and developing a team as the company scales. This role is for someone who thrives in ambiguity, moves fast, and can transition between month-end close and board-level storytelling. You will report directly to the CEO and participate in consequential decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Own the investor relationship end-to-end, including board materials, quarterly updates, cap table hygiene, and 409A valuations.
- Lead financial preparation for future raises, including data room, diligence, financial narrative, and coordination with outside counsel.
- Build and own financial models, forecasts, and budgets, with fluency in SaaS metrics (ARR, NRR, CAC, LTV).
- Manage cash and burn tracking, keeping leadership informed and providing insights on capital allocation and headcount.
- Establish scalable accounting processes, controls, and systems, including monthly and quarterly close, financial statements, ASC 606 revenue recognition, and audit readiness.
- Oversee federal, state, and local tax and compliance obligations, including sales tax nexus and R&D tax credits.
- Manage payroll, benefits administration, AP, vendor relationships, and banking until a team is in place to handle these operations.
- Hire and develop the finance team as the company grows, defining the standards for finance talent at Fulcrum.
Requirements
- 8+ years of finance experience, including accounting, FP&A, and investor-facing work.
- Proven ability to build and create structure, not just operate existing systems.
- Demonstrated success in hiring and developing finance talent.
- Strong command of GAAP, ASC 606 revenue recognition, financial modeling, and board-level reporting.
- Fluency in SaaS metrics and experience building reporting infrastructure.
- Experience supporting or leading a fundraise (Series A and beyond), including working with outside counsel.
- Comfort managing tax, compliance, payroll, and equity administration, with the judgment to engage external expertise when needed.
- Independent thinking, ability to form views from first principles, and proactive problem-solving.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financials into clear narratives.
- Ability to work 5 days a week from our San Francisco office or willingness to relocate.
