About the Role

The Albert Schweitzer Foundation seeks a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organization through its next phase of development. The CEO will have overall operational responsibility for strategy implementation, maximizing the foundation's impact by aligning leadership, culture, resources, and external relations with its vision. This role involves leading the C-level team and three department heads of an organization with approximately 40 employees, strengthening the foundation for future demands, and representing it externally.

Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for strategy implementation with clear priorities, measurable milestones, and impact-oriented steering.
  • Ensuring central activities, resources, and decisions consistently contribute to maximum impact for animals.
  • Responsibility for strategic resource allocation, high impact per euro spent, and organizational development.
  • Leading and developing the C-level and department heads as a strategically aligned and collaboratively working leadership unit.
  • Establishing a shared leadership culture with clear roles, supported decisions, constructive feedback, and high accountability.
  • Strategic personnel development to ensure the foundation is resilient, professional, and capable in the long term.
  • Sovereign representation of the foundation to key decision-makers in business, politics, philanthropy, civil society, media, and other NGOs.
  • Building and maintaining strategic relationships that strengthen the foundation's goals and open new avenues for action.
  • Promoting effective collaborations, especially where they increase the overall impact for animals.
  • Trustful collaboration with the board in a clearly defined role distribution.
  • Transparent communication regarding strategy, impact, resources, risks, and organizational development.

Requirements

  • Deep identification with the mission: Understanding of animal welfare and the food transition, effective levers, and a genuine, long-term commitment to the mission.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in strategic leadership roles, preferably in NGOs, foundations, animal welfare, advocacy, or other purpose-driven organizations. Alternatively, comparable experience from business, politics, or consulting.
  • Several years of experience in leading managers, leadership teams, or interdisciplinary organizational units.
  • Completed university degree (e.g., Business Administration, Political Science, Social Sciences, Communications, Law, Economics, Organizational Sciences) or comparable qualification.
  • Strong strategic thinking and the ability to translate an ambitious overall strategy into clear priorities, decisions, and implementation.
  • Experience in organizational and strategic personnel development.
  • Entrepreneurial thinking and action, combined with strong value orientation, resource awareness, and a clear focus on impact.
  • High resilience, problem-solving skills, and a strong agency mindset: taking responsibility, acting, and empowering others.
  • Reflective use of AI tools in daily work.
  • Experience with project management tools such as Asana, monday.com, Jira, or similar applications for transparent steering of strategic initiatives, responsibilities, coordination, and progress within the leadership team.
