About the Role
Labs exists to provide engineering teams with the headspace to follow hunches, investigate anomalies, or prove out unrequested ideas. Most investigations will be self-initiated, and while some may not yield results, others have the potential to significantly change the company's capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Spotting opportunities where existing subsystems can be leveraged for new capabilities.
- Profiling and optimizing system performance to reduce load.
- Investigating promising ideas and documenting findings, even if they prove to be dead ends.
- Contributing to diverse codebases across multiple programming languages.
- Debugging unfamiliar systems and reading existing code to understand functionality.
Requirements
- Proven ability to solve complex problems.
- Deep understanding of system-level operations including memory, cache behavior, NUMA, and system calls.
- Proficiency in C/C++.
- Experience working with multiple programming languages (e.g., C++, Java, Go, JavaScript, Swift).
- Ability to quickly become proficient in unfamiliar technology stacks.
- Self-starter with a collaborative and low-ego approach.
- Comfort working at the system and network levels.
- Experience with profiling tools.
- Experience with reverse-engineering and debugging unfamiliar systems.
- Demonstrated history of self-initiated projects.
- Ability to parachute into and modify other teams' codebases.
