About the Role
Teneo is seeking a high-calibre Senior Vice President to join its Strategy and Communications team in Tokyo. This role involves providing integrated communications counsel to business leaders and CEOs, supporting a wide range of activities including communications strategy, transaction communications, investor relations, media relations, crisis management, ESG advisory, market research, and government relations. The Senior Vice President will lead client accounts, act as a primary client contact, and drive activity across multiple account teams to achieve clients' reputational and strategic goals.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted advisor to multinational clients on corporate reputation, campaigning, and strategic communications.
- Lead the development and deployment of integrated communications strategies using research, insights, and global resources.
- Provide expert counsel on reputation management, stakeholder engagement, and proactive storytelling.
- Advise clients on issues management and crisis communications.
- Guide clients in their engagement with buy and sell-side stakeholders, stock exchanges, and institutional, retail, and governmental shareholders.
- Support critical workstreams such as government affairs, crisis management, ESG, M&A, restructurings, and other special situations.
- Lead account delivery, managing a team of experts to provide high-quality client servicing and acting as the main client point person.
- Actively coach and mentor junior team members.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships, seeking growth opportunities.
- Proactively manage clients to take advantage of opportunities and resolve issues.
- Actively build a network of new client/prospect relationships, working on new business opportunities including leading proposals and participating in client pitch meetings.
- Demonstrate commercial acumen in costing and managing project delivery.
- Develop understanding and fluency across Teneo’s wide breadth of service offerings.
- Take responsibility for managing junior colleagues, supporting their performance reviews and career growth.
- Support the smooth running of client servicing operations.
- Build strong relationships, fostering long-term partnerships and seeking organic growth opportunities through new business proposal development.
- Create advisory notes for client leadership, addressing media narratives, geopolitical risks, and reputational issues.
- Monitor media coverage for clients and competitors.
- Provide support and insight to client teams, proactively highlighting opportunities and potential areas of concern.
- Build a strong network of effective relationships internally and externally.
- Proactively seek formal and informal learning and development opportunities to support professional growth and contribute to the sharing of learnings across the wider team.
Requirements
- 10-15 years of experience in corporate or financial communications, investor relations, corporate planning, compliance, investment banking, or strategic advisory roles.
- At least five years of working experience within a Japanese corporate.
- Strong track record of galvanizing high stakes relationships with both Japanese and international media.
- Strong working knowledge of Japanese media.
- Native fluency in Japanese and excellent Japanese writing and presentation skills.
- Business-level fluency in English.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills, including logical thinking.
- Ability to take personal responsibility for quality, deliver within deadlines, and perform under pressure with close attention to detail.
- Bachelor’s degree ideally in business, journalism, communications, public policy, finance or economics.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, including proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel.
