About the Role
The Director of Digital Experience is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing integrated digital product experiences that enhance visitor engagement with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco through innovative digital products, content, and experiences. This role increases public awareness and engagement with the museum’s brand, exhibitions, collection, educational content, and public programs via digital platforms, delivering user-centered digital experiences across the visitor journey. The role spearheads public-facing digital technologies including the website, mobile applications, in-gallery digital experiences, and digital content strategy, aligning with institutional goals and supporting financial health through positive online user experiences. The Director drives digital transformation initiatives, enabling the organization to be more agile and financially sustainable.
Responsibilities
- Develops and implements a comprehensive digital experience roadmap supporting institutional strategic priorities and audience engagement.
- Drives digital innovation and fosters a culture of iteration and experimentation across the organization.
- Leads and coordinates digital product initiatives such as website redesigns, new web features, and digital guide platform management.
- Oversees the execution of the digital content strategy, including web content, social media, video production, and interactive experiences.
- Oversees the management of key digital technology databases, including collections information and digital asset management systems.
- Acts as the primary point of contact for large-scale web and interactive projects with outside agencies and internal teams.
- Oversees digital user research, A/B testing, and data analysis to inform product and content iterations.
- Consults and collaborates with IT and Data Services teams on hosting services and optimizes cross-departmental integration of digital tools.
- Ensures all public-facing digital products and platforms adhere to modern web accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.
- Directly manages and supervises a team including Web Product, Web, Digital Media Production, Social Media, Film, Collections Information Services, and Digital Asset Management teams.
- Manages the cohesive department budget and tracks subcategory budgets to ensure initiatives are delivered on time and within budget.
- Stays abreast of technology trends, early adoption opportunities, and best practices, identifying tech firms for partnerships.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university or equivalent experience.
- 7 years of experience leading digital product and content initiatives, preferably in a museum environment.
- Experience developing and implementing long-term digital strategies for public-facing brands or institutions.
- Demonstrated experience acting as a digital product manager, taking digital tools from concept to launch.
- Experience with emerging technologies and developing in-gallery tech activations.
- Experience working with product teams or developing digital products like websites, mobile apps, or interactive apps or screens.
- Experience with and focus on storytelling through media for a general audience.
- Experience with social media campaigns and strategy.
- Working understanding of the social media landscape.
- Experience working with agencies to produce digital products and experiences.
- Experience in museums or mission-driven institutions is a plus.
- Experience with TMS, Media Studio, Salesforce, Ticketure, enterprise email marketing platforms, and other technology platforms is a plus.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
- Ability to communicate complex development or technical issues/needs to leadership.

- COFAM is the Corporation of Fine Arts Museums and is the privately funded non-profit corporation which supports the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, a department of the City and County of San Francisco.
- Comprising the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, we are the largest public arts institution in the City of San Francisco and one of the largest art museums in the United States.
