About the Role

Open Door Legal (ODL) is seeking a Managing Attorney - External Partnerships to lead, manage, and direct pro bono partners, contract attorneys, private law firms, and legal service organizations. This role is crucial for increasing ODL's capacity and closing the justice gap by coordinating the placement of legal matters internally or with external partners. The position offers a challenging and rewarding experience for individuals passionate about leadership, strategic growth, and making a significant impact on the lives of low-income clients.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit and maintain referral relationships with Pro Bono partners, contract attorneys, private law firms, and legal service organizations, including attending networking events.
  • Conduct initial and periodic meetings with pro bono attorneys and partners to ensure ongoing participation.
  • Ensure timely placement of outgoing referrals as part of the Triage Team.
  • Gather data and outcomes information from referral partners for grant reporting.
  • Supervise pro bono and contractor attorneys on triaged cases, maintaining knowledge of substantive law across practice areas.
  • Organize legal clinics and monitor the delivery of services by non-legal counselors.
  • Provide and ensure team provides services and support to low-income clients with sensitivity to cultural, socio-economic, and disability barriers.
  • Ensure external partner cases achieve positive client feedback ratings.
  • Embody ODL's values of teamwork, grit, caring, passion, and dynamism.

Requirements

  • Membership in good standing with the California State Bar.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of relevant professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience directly supervising staff attorneys, with references.
  • Knowledge in at least one ODL practice area and superior court civil procedure.
  • Ability and willingness to work out of any of the San Francisco office locations.
  • Genuine motivation for working with low-income clients and ability to work effectively with clients impacted by trauma.
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to self-learning and professional development.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomacy skills for supervision and relationship building.
  • High level of comfort learning and using technology and case management systems (Salesforce, Dropbox, Google Suite).
  • Willingness to make a minimum two-year commitment to the organization.

  • $95,500 - $111,500 per year
