About the Role

This role involves performing elementary professional environmental health work while undergoing supervised in-service training to become qualified as a Public Health Sanitarian. The training includes assisting in the enforcement of public health laws and sanitary codes, with progressively responsible duties assigned based on experience and professional development. All work is reviewed by senior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the inspection of food establishments, including restaurants, delicatessens, mobile units, schools, and temporary food establishments.
  • Conducts inspections of private water supplies, private sewage disposal systems, bathing beaches, and swimming pools.
  • Inspects facilities for refuse disposal, x-ray installations, temporary residences, and farm labor camps.
  • Assists in the inspection of air pollution control devices, sewage and industrial waste treatment plants, and toxic materials storage facilities.
  • Participates in monitoring water supply and marine environments.
  • Collects water, food, and other required samples for laboratory examination.
  • Prepares and submits reports on investigations and field inspections.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum of thirty (30) credit hours in the natural sciences, with no more than twelve (12) credit hours in the applied sciences.
  • Must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and during employment.
