About the Role
Bluestaq is seeking an Engineering Manager to build and lead the UK engineering support team for its first operational programme. This role involves hiring Linux Systems Administrators, establishing shift structures, and owning processes and escalation paths. The ideal candidate will be a people-first, technically grounded leader, hands-on in the initial phase, and responsible for establishing Bluestaq's UK engineering practices.
Responsibilities
- Stand up and run the UK engineering support capability for the first operational programme, including processes, tooling, shift structure, and escalation paths.
- Hire, onboard, and develop a high-performing team of Linux Systems Administrators.
- Serve as the UK technical authority for Linux systems administration, operational tooling, and incident response.
- Maintain operational readiness for 24/7 support, ensuring system uptime, failover readiness, and rapid response.
- Ensure systems meet security and compliance requirements in partnership with cyber and IT functions.
- Create a culture of psychological safety, ownership, and operational discipline.
- Represent engineering in programme reviews and customer discussions, communicating progress, risks, and blockers.
- Communicate constantly and clearly with team members, customers, and internal Bluestaq teams.
Requirements
- Proven experience leading or growing a technical team with demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop engineers.
- Strong background in technical operations, systems administration, or platform engineering, running complex, secure systems.
- Hands-on experience with data fabrics and database management.
- Working knowledge of DevSecOps, Secure by Design, and cyber security practices.
- Technical depth sufficient to set direction and make sound trade-offs.
- Communication skills to convey complex matters clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Working understanding of 24/7 support requirements, including process, redundancy, escalation paths, and shift culture.
- A builder mindset, comfortable in ambiguity and operating within established engineering frameworks.
- Customer-oriented mindset with the ability to manage expectations and communicate clearly across service boundaries.
- Right to work in the United Kingdom.
- UK Security Check (SC) clearance or eligibility to obtain it, with NATO SECRET for allied programmes.
- Open to British (United Kingdom) citizens only due to security clearance and nature of work.
- Eligible and willing to travel within the UK and overseas (Europe, United States) approximately 10-15% of the time, including periods up to four weeks.
- Expected start date between October and November 2026.
