About the Role

This position is responsible for the maintenance of 30 Austin Public Health facilities, including various repairs (carpentry, plumbing, electrical), painting, remodeling projects, staff and equipment moves, furniture assembly, and vehicle operation.

Responsibilities

• Inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs and maintenance.
• Performs minor repairs to tables, chairs, and cabinets.
• Installs or replaces floor and ceramic tiles.
• Repairs or replaces electric plugs and cords.
• Drives vehicles as needed.
• Moves furniture, file cabinets, and equipment using hand dollies.
• Performs service on pumps, air handlers, and cooling towers.
• Repacks, changes oil/filters, and lubricates equipment.
• Operates drills, buffers, grinders, and sanders.
• Operates various power saws.
• Operates acetylene cutting torch and welder.
• Performs basic plumbing installations and repairs, such as installing and repairing faucets, unclogging drains, and replacing valves.
• Measures using tapes, transits, and levels.
• Performs semi-skilled carpentry work in the construction and repair of walls and ceilings.
• Reads profiles and blueprints.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
• Two (2) years of custodial, building maintenance, or construction work.
• Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.
• Texas Class C Operator's License.
• Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience.
• Ability to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
• External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite.
• Applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
• Immunization compliance with the department’s immunization policy.
• Proof of having had certain vaccinations is required for employees that work in an environment that involves face-to-face interaction with pregnant women, infants, children, STI/TB clients, immunocompromised clients, and clients at high risk for TB on a routine basis.
• Must comply with the tobacco-free workplace policy.

Skills

• Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in routine carpentry, ground maintenance, and basic plumbing.
• Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in moderate levels of construction, i.e., building walls, hanging doors and windows.
• Knowledge of proper safety practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of City practice, policy, and procedures.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
• Skill in planning and organizing.
• Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
• Ability to operate power tools.
• Ability to read and understand simple blueprints.
• Experience in various building repairs (carpentry, plumbing, electrical), painting, and other remodeling projects.

• Experience in driving large vehicles and trailers.
• Experience in managing multiple jobs at multiple locations.
• Superb customer service skills.

• Minimum of 40% per week in-office standard
• Some positions may require additional time at their designated worksite.
• Evenings and weekends may be required on occasion
• Up to 60% remotely, depending upon position and business needs.

Experience Level
