About the Role
Sydney Credit Union is seeking a self-motivated and ambitious Financial Service Officer (FSO) to provide financial advice by understanding member needs and empowering them to achieve their financial goals. This role focuses on building relationships and trust through engaged conversations, rather than just selling products.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain strong member relationships through a holistic approach to financial well-being.
- Manage the member experience, ensuring clear understanding of product and service features and benefits.
- Prepare credit information, including applicant assets, credit experience, references, debt/income ratio, and credit score, in accordance with policy.
- Verify creditworthiness by obtaining credit bureaus, contacting employers, creditors, and references, and approving or declining credit within limits.
- Compile lending packages and establish loan/mortgage structures, including rates, terms, and repayment options, while educating members on debt management.
- Ensure loan/mortgage agreements are complete and accurate, adhering to policy and regulatory requirements, and securing collateral before fund disbursement.
- Proactively engage members to discuss evolving financial goals, provide counseling, cross-sell credit union products/services, and make referrals.
- Maintain up-to-date member accounts and act as the first point of contact for arrears to arrange payments, manage delinquencies, and prevent write-offs.
- Grant temporary overdrafts within policy limits.
- Approve loan payment extensions and substitution of loan securities.
- Participate in credit union promotions, member events, and community events.
- Assist and back-up team members and complete other assigned duties.
Requirements
- A minimum of 7 years of member-facing experience providing financial advice (lending, credit cards, RRSPs, etc.) with SCU, OR a university degree plus a minimum of 2 years of member-facing experience at SCU.
- Ability to utilize strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively manage member expectations.
- Demonstrated ability to build trust and maintain long-term relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to build a network of referrals within our community for business development.
- Passion for learning and expanding knowledge towards personal development.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize, coupled with high attention to detail.
- Motivation to actively participate in and contribute to the measurable success of in-branch campaigns.
- Knowledge of lending and wealth management.
- Knowledge of financial accounting and financial principles and policies within a regulatory environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Proven ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Initiative, enthusiasm, and a keen understanding of and commitment to nurturing member relations.
- A confident and competent person who is a positive influence on co-workers, sharing financial knowledge.
- A self-starter who can see opportunities and find solutions, with the proven ability to meet and exceed business/sales objectives.
