About the Role
As In-House Legal Counsel I, you will focus on being a great lawyer within Canada's largest in-house P&C insurance litigation team. You will manage and creatively resolve casualty, property, and accident benefits files, benefiting from work flexibility, support, and a feeling of value.
Responsibilities
- Work with autonomy in your practice and collaborate with a high-performing team of lawyers, paralegals, adjusters, and legal support professionals.
- Help Intact achieve strategic goals related to indemnity and expense control.
- Independently handle a variety of insurance defence files, including property, casualty and accident benefits disputes from beginning to end.
- Draft opinions, pleadings, affidavits, and other legal documents to support applications, mediations, judicial settlement conferences, case conferences, private arbitrations, trials and LAT hearings (both oral and written).
- Independently prepare and conduct applications, discoveries, examinations under oath, mediations, LAT hearings, arbitrations, pre-trial conferences and trials.
- Provide support to Intermediate and Senior Legal Counsel by second chairing, providing research, and other appropriate file related tasks.
- Report on and assess claims with a focus on controlling indemnity but, at the same time, be strategic and pragmatic with a view to proactive and efficient resolution.
- Share knowledge and coach your Intact colleagues both inside and outside your department.
Requirements
- A member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Minimum of 2+ years of insurance litigation experience.
- Experience in legal research and writing, including authorship of legal opinions.
- Experience drafting pleadings, application documents, tribunal documents, mediation briefs and pre-hearing memoranda.
- Experience conducting case conferences, settlement conferences, discoveries, examinations under oath and mediations.
- Proficiency in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes.
- LAT hearing and trial experience, particularly independent hearing/trial experience, is a definite asset.
- Proficiency in technologies, tools, and software programs to optimize operational efficiency and decision making, including but not limited to AI tools, iManage, ACL and the Microsoft Office package of programs.
- Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada from the anticipated start date and throughout their employment and are solely responsible for maintaining their work eligibility.

- 101,800 - 124,400 (based on a 35-hour workweek)
