About the Role

Physical Intelligence is seeking a Data Annotation Lead to oversee and scale annotation operations. This role is critical to the company's mission of bringing general-purpose AI to the physical world, requiring the development of systems, metrics, and organizational structures to manage a workforce growing from hundreds to thousands.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end annotation operations including throughput, quality, cost, and delivery.
  • Scale the annotation workforce from hundreds to thousands through strategic planning and hiring.
  • Build and lead a multi-layer management structure.
  • Design human-in-the-loop workflows to scale throughput using autolabeling and model-based annotation.
  • Develop training and certification pipelines for new annotators.
  • Define and maintain quality standards through rubrics, audits, and QA loops.
  • Establish and report on operational metrics to drive continuous improvement.
  • Manage capacity planning and prioritize high-impact work.
  • Oversee performance management with clear standards and feedback processes.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering to define annotation tooling.
  • Partner with research and project leads to translate requirements into instructions and SLAs.
  • Manage the in-house and vendor workforce mix.
  • Oversee the operating budget and optimize unit economics.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience leading scaled data or annotation operations with teams of 100+.
  • 3+ years of experience as a manager of managers.
  • Proven track record of building annotation programs from the ground up.
  • Deep expertise in annotation best practices and strategy.
  • Experience integrating autolabeling and human-in-the-loop workflows.
  • Fluency in operational and quality metrics for large workforces.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with product, engineering, and research teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working understanding of machine learning and the impact of annotation quality on model performance.
