About the Role
The Associate State Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement develops and executes state, federal, and local advocacy activities. This role represents the organization and its interests to elected officials, government agencies, and partner organizations, while leading state-level implementation of national campaign efforts and managing volunteer teams to advance advocacy and community outreach goals.
Responsibilities
- Identifies public policy and organizational issues, developing and implementing advocacy strategies at local, state, and federal levels.
- Collaborates with internal and external partners on advocacy campaign communication strategy development.
- Utilizes direct action organizing tactics and grassroots advocacy tools to build constituent support for legislative priorities.
- Works with staff, volunteers, members, and cross-organization teams to achieve community engagement goals.
- Establishes organizational presence in targeted communities by engaging multicultural audiences, developing partnerships, building volunteer capacity, and executing programs and events.
- Represents the organization to government agencies and media outlets, building and maintaining relationships with governmental representatives.
- Develops and communicates persuasive narratives aligned with organizational priorities to diverse audiences.
- Serves as a subject-matter expert on advocacy issues, producing reports and convening meetings to disseminate findings and advance solutions.
- Recruits, trains, develops, and deploys volunteers in accordance with organizational goals.
- Supports volunteer needs and designs opportunities to maximize engagement, ensuring inclusion of volunteer perspectives in strategic planning.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience.
- Proven experience/successful track record of building relationships and influence between AARP and Texas legislative and policy leaders.
- Commitment to nonpartisanship with experience in lobbying, coalition and relationship building, and using grassroots techniques to influence legislation at the state level with the Texas legislature.
- Experience with developing and executing campaign tactics to promote issues related to AARP’s social mission.
- Ability to develop both short- and long-term strategies and tactical plans for legislative advocacy and grassroots campaigns.
- Experience with recruiting, engaging, and managing volunteer activists and a demonstrated commitment to empowering volunteers.
- Willingness to travel up to 50%, with flexibility for evening and weekend engagements.
- Ability to lead and manage multiple issues and/or projects simultaneously.
- Ability to function in a Matrix Management atmosphere.
- Ability to work and thrive in a collaborative team environment, functioning effectively in an ambiguous and changing environment.
- Comfort with the Microsoft Office suite, internal reporting systems, and ability and willingness to learn new functionality.
- Regular and reliable job attendance.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships.
- Independent judgement in evaluation options to make sound decisions.
- Ability to work effectively in an in-office/open office environment with moderate noise.
