About the Role

Pinterest is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join their marketing organization. This role will introduce greater scientific rigor into marketing measurement and optimization processes to shape user growth and marketing strategy. The work will influence strategic decisions, identify growth investment opportunities, and define metrics to sustain the user base. The position involves collaboration with cross-functional partners across Marketing, Product, Engineering, Design, Research, Product Analytics, and Data Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct deep strategic analysis to answer growth marketing ecosystem questions, including driving monthly active users from paid performance marketing, quantifying its effect in new markets, and increasing user engagement and lifetime value.
  • Evolve existing systems such as geo-testing and other incrementality testing frameworks.
  • Build and deploy statistical and machine learning models (e.g., propensity, forecasting, lifetime value) to optimize marketing strategies and enhance audience targeting.
  • Develop new statistical models and maintain/improve existing ones like user lifetime value, budgeting, and long-term user retention models.
  • Collaborate on product and business problems with cross-functional partners across Product, Engineering, Analytics, Marketing, and Data Engineering.
  • Evolve experimentation capabilities and tools to evaluate the business impact of performance marketing investments, advise on best practices, identify flaws, and build tools for experiment analysis.
  • Identify and help teams track the right measures of success, owning the full lifecycle of metrics from logging requirements and definition to prototype pipelines and improvements.
  • Translate complex analytical findings into clear, actionable insights and strategic recommendations for technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.
  • Write clear, actionable analyses to help teams uncover opportunities and identify areas for improvement in existing strategies.
  • Design, maintain, and promote dashboards and automated reporting tools for self-serve, data-driven decision-making.
  • Build and optimize ETL data pipelines to automate reporting, support deep dive analysis, and perform feature engineering for analytical models.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of combined post-graduate academic and industry experience applying scientific methods to solve real-world problems.
  • Hands-on experience building marketing measurement solutions to quantify the business impact of marketing tactics and investments.
  • Strong background in statistics and quantitative analysis, with experience applying advanced statistical techniques.
  • Expertise in at least one scripting language (ideally Python/R).
  • Proficiency in SQL/Hive and ability to write efficient SQL queries.
  • Strong business and product sense, with skills in shaping vague questions into well-defined analyses and success metrics.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to lead initiatives and communicate findings to leadership and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience leading key technical projects.
  • Strong experimentation background.
  • Statistical rigor.
  • Experience with causal inference projects.
