About the Role
The Infrastructure Engineering and Tooling team (Atlas) owns the ecosystem for deploying, running, and managing the Trainline platform. This role involves building the next version of the infrastructure platform, focusing on reliability, quality, automation, and secure, scalable delivery. You will collaborate with a team of software and platform engineers, working with technologies like Terraform, AWS, Node.js, C#, and Python to improve the platform and deliver meaningful infrastructure changes.
Responsibilities
- Deliver complex improvements to Trainline’s engineering platforms, building scalable, reliable, and secure infrastructure.
- Implement and evolve infrastructure changes using Terraform, identifying opportunities for improvement in quality, maintainability, and automation.
- Apply least-privilege and secure-by-default principles across AWS accounts to meet security and operational excellence standards.
- Build or contribute to automation scripts and tooling using Node.js or Python for faster, safer, and more repeatable delivery.
- Support and review the work of mid-level engineers, sharing context and providing constructive feedback.
- Collaborate with Tech Leads, Delivery Managers, and stakeholders to shape delivery plans and manage dependencies.
- Identify risks, blockers, or quality concerns early to unblock the team and maintain clear, sustainable delivery.
- Test, validate, and deploy infrastructure changes through CI/CD pipelines, ensuring deliverables are robust, well-documented, and production-ready.
Requirements
- Strong experience with AWS services (ECS, Lambda, IAM, CloudFront) and a solid understanding of operational and security best practices.
- Proven experience delivering infrastructure changes using Terraform, preferably in complex or large-scale cloud environments.
- Ability to work independently on complex platform engineering problems while fostering clear communication and collaboration.
- Experience using Node.js or Python for automation, scripting, or integration, focusing on practical, maintainable solutions.
- Good understanding of secure cloud design, including least privilege, account structure, and service-to-service authentication (e.g., OIDC).
- Experience using AI tooling for engineering tasks (coding, code review, research, productivity).
- Track record of delivering outcomes in agile, delivery-focused teams, with confidence to raise risks and support shared progress.
- Helpful experience with multi-account/multi-region AWS management, CDN, WAF, Git-based CI/CD pipelines, or enterprise-scale AWS environments.
