About the Role

We are seeking a Staff or Principal Platform Engineer to build and operate the foundational platform for AppGate's AI products. This role requires deep DevOps and cloud infrastructure expertise, hands-on experience with operationalizing AI/ML systems, and a strong focus on observability. You will own the platform, ensuring it is fast, reliable, and observable at scale, setting technical direction while actively contributing to development.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate cloud infrastructure, services, and pipelines for AI products.
Implement observability by instrumenting APIs, cloud services, and AI/ML infrastructure with metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting.
Define SLOs and operational health metrics.
Build model serving and inference pipelines, experiment tracking, and MLOps tooling.
Manage model deployment, versioning, drift monitoring, and lifecycle.
Apply SRE practices to enhance reliability, reduce toil, and maintain target latency and uptime.
Drive infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, and self-service tooling for rapid and safe product deployment.
Define platform standards, architecture, and best practices.
Raise the engineering bar through design reviews and mentorship.
Partner with data scientists, product teams, and leadership to align platform investment with strategic vision.

Requirements

Extensive platform, infrastructure, or SRE engineering experience with a track record of operating production systems at scale.
Staff-level candidates typically have 8+ years of experience; Principal-level candidates typically have 12+ years of experience.
Strong command of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
Proficiency with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or equivalent).
Experience with CI/CD.
Hands-on experience implementing observability across APIs, cloud services, and distributed systems.
Experience with tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or the ELK stack.
Experience with SLO and error-budget practices.
Experience building or operating model serving, inference pipelines, and MLOps tooling.
Experience with tools such as MLflow, Kubeflow, or SageMaker.
Experience with model deployment, versioning, and drift monitoring.
Familiarity with real-time and batch ingestion pipelines, feature stores, and data quality at production scale.
Fluency in a primary backend language (Python, Go, or similar).
Strong bias toward automation, testing, and reliable, maintainable systems.
Proven record of setting technical direction.
Experience leading complex cross-team initiatives.
Experience mentoring senior engineers.

Ability to thrive in a small, fast-moving environment.
