About the Role

Big Art Loop is seeking a Director of Development to build its fundraising function and drive sustained contributed revenue. This is a hands-on, build-from-the-ground-up role reporting directly to the CEO, focused on architecting the development function of a high-visibility civic initiative.

Responsibilities

  • Build and run the major gifts pipeline, identifying, qualifying, and cultivating prospects in partnership with the CEO.
  • Prepare the CEO for cultivation moments with briefing memos, prospect research, talking points, and follow-up tracking.
  • Own corporate partnerships and sponsorships end-to-end, including prospecting, proposal development, structuring, closing, and renewal.
  • Lead foundation and institutional giving, including prospect research, LOIs, proposals, reporting, and relationship management.
  • Design and run donor stewardship, including acknowledgments, recognition, naming opportunities, donor communications, and relationship touchpoints.
  • Run development operations, including CRM hygiene, gift processing, pledge tracking, reporting, and necessary systems and documentation.
  • Partner on fundraising events such as donor walks, dinners, unveilings, and Liaisons gatherings.
  • Support the board on giving by shaping expectations, preparing members for cultivation, and integrating board networks into the pipeline.
  • Help architect the path to a capital campaign by assessing readiness, shaping the case for support, and laying the groundwork for scaled fundraising.

Requirements

  • Proven closer with 7+ years in development, demonstrated success closing five- and six-figure gifts, and managing relationships at the seven-figure level.
  • Track record of building or substantially scaling a development function, ideally in a lean or early-stage environment.
  • Experience across at least two of individual major gifts, corporate partnerships, or foundation/institutional giving.
  • Polished written and verbal communication skills, including direct donor correspondence and proposal writing.
  • High discretion and judgment in handling confidential donor and financial information.
  • Strong organization and project management skills, comfortable owning complex work without close supervision.
  • Comfort with CRM systems (Salesforce, Raiser's Edge, or similar) and Google Workspace.
  • Active use of Claude and other AI tools to accelerate work.
  • Experience in arts, cultural, civic, or public-facing nonprofit organizations.
  • Capital campaign experience.
  • An established donor and corporate network in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Experience supporting an organization through fiscal sponsorship transition or nonprofit formation.
  • Genuine interest in the arts, philanthropy, or the civic life of San Francisco.
