About the Role
Prepare detailed estimates for mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, technology, and low-voltage systems (MEP) based on design documents, narratives, and specifications.
Responsibilities
- Attend site walks and pre-bid meetings for project pursuits.
- Develop win strategies for bid and proposal submissions.
- Establish and maintain key relationships with M&E subcontractors.
- Lead the development of conceptual estimates, GMP, lump sum, and design-build bid submissions.
- Act as a liaison with external consultants and project management organizations to estimate project budget requirements.
- Coordinate the tender development process on behalf of clients.
- Prepare quantity take-offs, analysis, estimates, and studies for MEP systems from conceptual design through construction documents.
- Perform preliminary design work as needed for conceptual estimates.
- Demonstrate extensive knowledge of bid preparation principles, including quantity take-off, sub-trade procurement, pricing, and bid closing.
- Ability to build an estimate without drawings or specifications.
- Identify competitors and understand current market conditions.
- Identify risks associated with contract and project documents.
- Solicit pricing from subcontractors and suppliers for labor, equipment, and materials.
- Provide information and guidance to project management staff during contract turnover.
- Develop working relationships with local MEP sub-contractors to maintain a list of qualified bidders.
- Develop working relationships with local material suppliers and equipment vendors to solicit accurate pricing.
- Perform constructability analysis of project documents.
- Communicate design and constructability issues to the project team.
- Provide first costs analysis and participate in life cycle analysis with the design team.
- Collaborate with operations staff and fellow estimators to ensure general conditions and requirements are addressed in estimates.
- Coordinate equipment pricing and scope with Source Blue for MEP estimates.
- Develop value analysis by defining cost-efficient alternatives for MEP systems, materials, and equipment.
- Act as liaison with engineers, design consultants, subcontractors, other Turner staff, and owner's representatives to resolve MEP issues.
- Participate in estimate reviews with the design team and client.
- Prepare bid recording sheets and scope requisitions for MEP systems bidding/procurement.
- Coordinate with fellow estimators to eliminate scope gaps and overlaps.
- Lead the evaluation of subcontractor proposals relative to their scope of work.
- Determine scope coverage and manage the risk of scope gaps.
- Assist project staff in evaluating large change orders.
- Understand MCA and NECA rates for MEP Systems.
- May supervise Assistant MEP Estimators, Estimating Assistants, and/or Interns.
- Gather and analyze MEP System bid data for all projects.
- Maintain a historical cost database of bid data.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering plus a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years related Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection/Electrical/Technology//LV System (MEP) estimating experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- Proven written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to read, understand and interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project schedules.
- Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Experience delivering projects using CCA5a, CCA5b, CCDC2, CCDC3, and CCDC14 Prime Contracts.
- PQS designation from the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors is an asset.
- Gold Seal Certification for the Canadian Construction Association is an asset.
- Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
