About the Role
The Building Science Technologist role reports to the Team Leader and requires a strong foundational understanding of building systems, including architectural features such as structural components, building envelopes, mechanical and electrical systems, roofing, interior elements, and site features.
Responsibilities
- Conduct Building and Property Condition Assessments for due diligence and/or capital planning purposes in accordance with the ASTM standards and UniFormat and best construction practices at various client sites.
- Perform Capital planning Building Condition Assessments and/or Reserve Fund Studies.
- Review and complete assessments of existing buildings and structures (roof assemblies, exterior cladding assemblies, balcony assemblies, fenestrations, and parking garage structures) to determine design and remedial work options.
- Conduct invasive building assessments and testing (ex. Roof cut tests, water / leak tests, etc.).
- Carry out all necessary quantity take-offs and measurements over the course of a project.
- Develop designs and specifications for restoration projects.
- Carry out construction reviews to ensure quality standards and design requirements are achieved.
- Prepare written reports of findings, summarizing, collating, and interpreting the results of field data and creating detailed AutoCAD drawings.
- Manage financial involvement and coordination with projects.
- Maintain QA/QC protocols.
- Maintain health and safety protocols as well as quality control within the group.
- Perform any other job-related duties that may be assigned.
Requirements
- Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code is required.
- Must be able to read technical specifications, drawings, and reports.
- Ability to perform fieldwork, including safely transporting ladders, tools, and PPE.
- Availability to travel.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and personal vehicle (expenses reimbursed).
Skills
- Proficiency using AutoCAD is preferred.
- Experience writing technical reports is preferred.
- Familiarity with UniFormat and asset management software will be considered an asset.
- Level I drone license will be considered an asset.
- Level I thermography will be considered an asset.
- Experience with Contract Administration will be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and ability to read and interpret technical specifications, drawings, and reports.
- Experience or familiarity with technical report writing; proficiency with AutoCAD, UniFormat, and asset management software is considered an asset.
