About the Role
The Custodian will be responsible for performing cleaning duties and operations in Barnard College’s academic buildings, residence halls, and grounds according to established standards and instructions.
Responsibilities
- Clean restrooms including floors, walls, tiles, ceiling, doors, vents, fixtures, and mirrors.
- Replenish restroom supplies.
- Dispose of trash and recyclables from assigned areas.
- Clean and maintain walls, floors, doors, frames, and glass surfaces in various campus locations.
- Maintain floors and carpets regularly, including sweeping, mopping, stripping, and waxing.
- Move and transport custodial supplies, furniture, equipment, materials, and supplies as directed.
- Move and arrange furniture, equipment, and supplies for events.
- Perform cleaning and setup of residential hall rooms and suites.
- Coordinate room cleaning for arriving student groups.
- Shovel snow and apply snow melt to clear walkways, paths, sidewalks, and building entrances during snow events.
- Comply with College rules, Facilities Services policies, and safety regulations.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Requires general knowledge of cleaning terms and safety procedures for handling chemicals, supplies, and equipment.
- Must be well-organized and able to prioritize work.
- Must be able to remain calm during stressful conditions.
- Must be able to respect the privacy and confidentiality of occupants in offices and residences.
- Must be able to interact professionally and supportively with Facilities Services staff and College members.
- Ability to read and write English and follow oral and written instructions.
- Able to bend, stoop, push, pull, lift, and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
- Requires average physical strength.
- Ability to climb stairs.

- Experience in use of mechanical cleaning equipment.
- Experience operating floor stripper and polisher.
- Experience operating carpet extractor.
- Experience operating water vacuum.
- Experience operating vacuum cleaner.
