About the Role

The Legal Director will provide strategic legal support to business divisions, assess legal risks, and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. This role involves advising on a wide range of matters including commercial, privacy, competition, consumer law, disputes, government interaction, and employment. The position also supports the development of legal services processes and educates business teams on legal issues.

Responsibilities

Distills complex legal issues for a business audience.
Advocates for positions while maintaining a collaborative approach.
Leads cross-functional projects.
Maintains in-depth knowledge of Abbott’s businesses and their broader impact.
Stays updated on changes in laws, policies, and enforcement trends.
Negotiates independently with customers, suppliers, or government agencies on strategic matters.
Selects and directs outside counsel, defining project objectives and managing budgets.
Identifies unmet needs and future legal issues, proposing proactive strategies.
Helps design, implement, and iterate Legal department processes.
Responsible for all legal services within the country.
Helps Area Counsel develop Legal department strategy.
Leads, participates in, and supports Legal Department goals and initiatives.
Mentors, coaches, and directs assigned attorneys and support staff.
Plays a key role in selecting, recruiting, and developing attorneys and support staff.
Provides input into attorney performance evaluations, merit increases, and developmental planning.

Requirements

Law degree, preferably qualified in Japan.
Fully bilingual: Japanese and English.
15+ years of relevant experience.
