About the Role

The Email & Collaboration Security (ECS) product line addresses critical enterprise security challenges including AI-augmented threats, collaboration security, multi-cloud complexity, and the need for rapid detection and response. This role requires reasoning about legacy systems and evolutionary trajectories to provide stable technical direction for ECS engineering teams, acting as a liaison between product management, engineering, and architecture leadership. Mimecast operates as an AI-first organization, expecting daily use of AI tools for design, documentation, analysis, and research.

Responsibilities

Lead from the problem space, engaging at the problem-framing stage with PMs, UX, and engineers to articulate customer constraints and define success criteria.
Own integration contracts (APIs, event contracts, data schemas) as first-class product artifacts that connect ECS capabilities to the broader Mimecast platform.
Build architectural context for engineering teams through ADRs, service interaction patterns, NFR targets, and data contracts.
Govern without blocking, introducing structure and discipline to reduce risk or improve quality, and constructively pushing back on platform standards when necessary.
Reason about cost and unit economics, modeling cost trajectories for new architecture work and flagging unexpected spend with remediation proposals.
Communicate effectively across all levels, from decision records for engineers to strategy narratives for leadership.

Requirements

10+ years building and operating production SaaS systems, with at least 3 years in a Solutions Architect, Principal Engineer, or equivalent role with product-shaping responsibility.
Broad architectural lens, considering system shape, data flows, and organizational constraints.
Comfort operating across cloud-native patterns (AWS, Kafka, managed services, distributed event architectures) at high throughput.
Prior close collaboration with Product Managers and UX designers, understanding jobs-to-be-done framing.
Genuine customer orientation.
Understanding of SaaS unit economics and the commercial implications of architectural choices.
Understanding of the implications of twenty years of software history in a production system, treating legacy as accumulated context.
Structure and discipline as cognitive defaults.
Ability to connect dots across a large picture, make decisions, and communicate them clearly.
Proactive self-starter who identifies and drives resolution for the right problems.
Comfort acting independently within a set of principles while maintaining alignment with stakeholders.
Ability to structure ambiguity and treat it as a problem to be solved.
Ability to reach a solution even without all the knowledge, navigating to an answer.
AI tooling treated as a core capability multiplier with daily practice in design, documentation, research synthesis, and prototyping.
Stays ahead of market and technology trends, bringing that signal back into product and architecture decisions.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
A track record of product-shaping responsibility, not just technical delivery.
Active, daily use of AI development tools in a professional setting.
