About the Role
Lead and grow a team of seven engineers responsible for SumUp's internal developer platform, including CI/CD, observability, developer portal, and an emerging AI platform. This high-visibility role directly impacts the productivity of hundreds of engineers and shapes the future of developer experience at SumUp.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a growing team of 5+ highly motivated engineers across observability, CI/CD, developer portal (Backstage), and FinOps tooling.
- Set clear priorities and establish strong ways of working for the team.
- Own and evolve the technical roadmap across all DevEx domains.
- Communicate trade-offs clearly to engineering leadership and internal stakeholders.
- Shape the AI Platform domain from the ground up, defining its charter and identifying value-add AI tooling.
- Partner with product engineering managers and platform peers to drive measurable improvements in deploy frequency, onboarding time, and support load.
- Build the case for team growth, identifying skill gaps and preparing the organization for future leadership needs.
Requirements
- Proven experience leading platform, infrastructure, or internal tooling teams at a senior engineering manager level.
- Track record of owning a technical domain end-to-end.
- Strong technical foundation across the DevEx stack: CI/CD, observability (Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent), Kubernetes-based platforms.
- Ability to make sound architectural decisions and earn engineer trust.
- Experience leading through ambiguity and organizational change, including reorgs, scope shifts, or leadership transitions.
- Ability to build and communicate a product-style roadmap for a platform domain with clear prioritization and a compelling narrative.
- Genuine curiosity about AI tooling in an engineering context.
- Confidence to lead a greenfield domain in the AI space.
