About the Role
The Manager of Safety & Training is responsible for ensuring compliance with company, federal, provincial, and municipal safety regulations within a school bus operation. This leadership role involves expertise in training, driver development, certifications, and operations, while supervising a team of Bus Driver Trainers.
Responsibilities
- Lead the unit-based safety and training function.
- Oversee Bus Driver Trainers and signing authorities for compliance with Driver Certification Program, Ministry of Transportation, HTA, and National Safety Code.
- Collaborate with government, industry, and internal stakeholders on safety and training.
- Ensure adherence to company, federal, provincial, and municipal compliance regulations.
- Assess and recommend updates to policy and procedure manuals.
- Manage and lead local training staff, initiatives, and ongoing education.
- Train drivers as required.
- Assist in the recruitment process, including interviewing, selecting, and training new drivers.
- Research and communicate updates on School Bus Driver regulations.
- Conduct collision investigations and reporting according to company procedures.
- Ensure drivers complete necessary training and assist in planning driver safety meetings.
- Liaise with customers, Ministry of Transportation, and Ministry of Labour.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including Highway Traffic Act, Workers Compensation, and Occupational Health and Safety.
- Investigate workplace accidents, collisions, incidents, and near misses, and implement preventative programs.
- Maintain employee safety records and manage regulatory compliance.
- Assist in the development and implementation of a proactive safety platform.
- Co-Chair Joint Health and Safety Committees.
- Be available to cover school runs if needed.
Requirements
- 5 years of experience in a School Bus Safety role or equivalent.
- Possess or be willing to obtain a valid Class B license.
- Maintain a professional driver's license.
- Successfully obtain First Aid & CPR certification.
- Capable of learning to communicate effectively.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Obtain and maintain Signing Authority.
- Complete a Professional Instructor in Driver Education course.
- Ability to walk, bend, twist, turn and lift up to 50lbs.
- Ability to sit for extended periods with repeated arm and shoulder movement.
- Climbing may be required for specific functions.
- Ability to travel based on business needs to various interprovincial locations.
