About the Role

CSOC Engineers leverage Fastly's security product suite to provide real-world security insights and address internet-scale threats. They serve as the primary escalation point for SOC Analysts, focusing on training, mentoring, process improvements, data analysis, and security tooling to advance products and capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Handle escalations related to monitoring and analyzing customer activity, including identifying layer 3/4 DDoS attacks, account-takeover, bot attacks, and other malicious web traffic.
  • Design, build, and support tooling for security analysts.
  • Work with highly scalable distributed systems and world-class engineers.
  • Configure traffic policing and shaping to throttle malicious traffic.
  • Identify and mitigate UDP Floods, ICMP Floods, and Reflection/Amplification attacks.
  • Identify and mitigate TCP SYN Floods, ACK Floods, RST Floods, and TCP state exhaustion attacks.
  • Gather requirements and develop Security Monitoring Systems and troubleshooting tools.
  • Ensure customer security by providing outstanding response to security issues.
  • Provide deep application-security experience on escalated cases from customers and automated systems.
  • Conduct continuous improvement work and research to enhance customer security products and operations.
  • Contribute to processes and policies that scale the organization.
  • Create, test, and deploy security content (e.g., WAF rules) in response to CVEs and emerging threats.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and training for new Security and Customer Support Engineers.
  • Create and review reporting for customers on security services.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to Kubernetes deployments and management.
  • Provide support for next-generation web application firewalls, including troubleshooting and performance optimization.
  • Actively participate in sprint planning, deliver committed tasks on time with quality code, collaborate with team members, communicate blockers, and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Manage CSOC tool-related escalations and troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • At least 3+ years of related experience in Network Security, Network Engineering, or Network Support roles.
  • Experience with CDNs, Cloud, and/or internet infrastructure products is ideal.
  • Understanding of stateless communication, fragmentation, and amplification vectors (DNS, NTP, CLDAP, SSDP).
  • Strong knowledge of BGP (Border Gateway Protocol).
  • Proficiency with IPv4/IPv6 addressing, subnetting, ICMP types/codes, and GRE tunneling.
  • Strong infosec background with strong knowledge and practical skills in application security.
  • Strong knowledge of core internet technologies like DNS, HTTP & TLS and how to debug with common tools.
  • Some software development skills/experience in Python, Go, Rust, or JS.
  • Experience in security operations or technical support.
  • Detection engineering experience – developing content for security products and services (e.g., WAF rules).
  • Experience with application server technologies and frameworks.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to mentor the team on security knowledge.
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
  • Focus on delivering exceptional customer experiences.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise routers and switches is ideal.
  • Experience with NetFlow/sFlow/IPFIX analysis using tools like Kentik, ElastiFlow, or NFSen for anomaly detection is ideal.
  • Analysis with log visualization tools (Grafana, Prometheus, Looker, Splunk, Elastic/ELK, or others) is ideal.
  • Experience working in a SOC or Incident Response Team is ideal.
  • Experience with Apache/NGINX/IIS or other web server platforms is ideal.
  • Cloud ecosystem knowledge and experience (AWS, GCP, or similar) is ideal.
  • Unix/Linux or Windows system administration is ideal.
  • Experience with systems configuration management and/or orchestration tools is ideal.
